Well, it’s December 31st. And for the first time since 2005, AL and HM have no plans.
Normally this week would be full of setting up and stocking up for our party, but it’s been very quiet here; as I’m sure it has been for you.
We had plans…big ones. This year is our 10th Wedding Anniversary, and would have been our 15th consecutive time hosting NYE. We printed save the date cards and everything!
But as the end of 2020 grew near, and it became clear that even the most modest plans couldn’t happen, we recycled those save the date cards..and just stopped talking about New Year’s.
Over the last few days we’ve had inquiries about what our plans are for tonight – if there’s any livestreaming happening, or some sort of group chat countdown. No plans.
It’s not the setting up, or even the party we really miss. It’s the friends. It’s seeing your faces, and everyone cramming together in a room for the last moments of the year. Thank you for being a friend. Travel down the road and back again. Your heart is true; you’re a pal and a confidant. And if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew… Well, you would see the biggest gift would be from me. And the card attached would say: “go fuck yerself, we’re the ones who host.”
Ugh, of course there’s lots to be thankful for, but this stinks. We miss you.
We’ll meet again.
